CIBC calls on Canadians to join in the Promise to be Changemakers in the fight against breast cancer

Paint your pinky pink when you register to run, donate or fundraise

TORONTO, Sept. 25, 2017 /CNW/ - CIBC (TSX: CM) (NYSE: CM) One in eight women in Canada will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and an estimated 72 women will be diagnosed today alone, which is why CIBC is calling on all Canadians to make a Promise to be Changemakers in the fight against breast cancer.

"For more than 20 years, the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure has helped change the face of breast cancer thanks to the tireless efforts and generosity of our communities," says Christina Kramer, Senior Executive Vice-President, CIBC. "This year, we are encouraging supporters to wear their passion like a badge of honour and paint their pinkies  pink to proudly display their commitment to fighting this disease through a promise to run, donate or fundraise."

Funds raised through the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure have led to progress in breast cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment and care, helping  reduce breast cancer mortality rates by 44 percent since their peak in the mid-1980s.  But there is still so much more to be done.

Breast cancer survivor Caylan Barber knows the impact that funded research has had on helping her through her fight against breast cancer.

"I am fortunate for the breast cancer research that played a huge part in determining my customized treatment plan for the rare breast cancer type I was diagnosed with," says 27-year old Caylan Barber, a member of CIBC's team. "Without this research, the outcome of my fight may have been completely different. It's the thousands of individuals who passionately give their time and keep their promise to donate who give me hope. It's never an easy fight."

This year, CIBC is also offering Canadians another way to make a difference by simply "tapping" to show their support. Through October 11, CIBC will donate $1* to the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure when a client makes a purchase using their CIBC mobile wallet via Apple Pay, Android Pay or Samsung Pay, to a maximum of $150,000.

The 2017 Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure will take place in 56 communities across Canada on Sunday, October 1, 2017. For more information on becoming a Changemaker and making a promise to end breast cancer, visit cibcrunforthecure.com or download the fundraising app.

Changemakers are encouraged to take to social media to showcase their promise by posting images of their linked pink pinkies, fundraisers and participation on Run Day along with their many forms of support. Join or follow the conversation on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook using #CIBCRunForTheCure.
