Donating $1,000 for programs and services at Springhill Youth Centre

    SPRINGHILL, NS, June 6 /CNW/ - CIBC showed its appreciation to its
clients today with an open house and giveaways throughout the day as part of
the 125th anniversary celebrations of the CIBC Springhill branch at 41 Main
St. Clients are also able to relive the past this week by viewing a display of
banking memorabilia and a series of heritage photos from years gone by.
    To mark the anniversary, CIBC will be presenting Springhill Youth Centre
with a cheque for $1,000 to fund health-related programming for youth.
Springhill Youth Centre offers a wide range of programs and services for youth
in the community.
    "We are very fortunate to have CIBC in our community supporting the
charitable sector," says Pam Adams, Community Centre Director, Springhill
Youth Centre. "We have worked with CIBC in the past. Their financial support
to the centre is yet another example of their interest in enhancing lives in
our community."
    "It has been an honour and a privilege to provide financial services to
our clients since 1883," said Harold Delaney, branch manager of CIBC
Springhill since 1984 and a 42-year veteran of the bank. "CIBC believes in
giving back to the communities where we live and work. We are proud of the
role played by the bank and our employees in supporting important community
organizations that serve Springhill and Cumberland County. It is our pleasure
to make this donation today to the Springhill Youth Centre."
    CIBC in Springhill also has been a supporter of other community
organizations, including the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre, All
Saints Hospital, All Saints Hospital Auxiliary, The Anne Murray Centre,
Cumberland County Cool Blues, Springhill High School, Springhill Elementary
Schools and numerous other not-for-profit groups in the area.
    It was back in 1883 when The Halifax Banking Company opened the doors of
its Springhill branch to serve residents of the town and the surrounding rural
area. The branch was re-branded to The Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1903 and
moved into a new two-storey brick building on the north side of Main Street in
1916. When the Springhill mining disasters of 1956 and 1958 devastated the
town, the provincial government asked the branch manager to be Honorary
Treasurer of the disaster relief fund. In 1958, the branch vault overflowed
with more than $2 million in donations. The name of the branch changed again
on June 1, 1961, this time to CIBC when the Imperial Bank of Canada and The
Canadian Bank of Commerce merged to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce. On February 5, 1982, the branch moved into a new building at the
corner of Main and Church Streets. CIBC donated the old building to the Town
of Springhill in 1985.
