Bay Street donation saves unique home for at risk women and infants from closing
$100,000 in new funding will help keep Nazareth House open TORONTO, July 27 /CNW/ - Thanks to the generosity of some of Bay Street's biggest financial players, one of Toronto's most important facilities for at risk women and infants remains open. The TMX Group, CIBC Children's Foundation, Bay Street Children's Foundation, TD Securities and the TD Securities Underwriting Hope Fund have donated $100,000 to Nazareth House, a non-profit home for at risk women and infants. This is in addition to ongoing funding provided by the RBC Foundation since 2002. For the past 24 years, Nazareth House has provided safe, affordable and healthy housing to over 1,000 women and 125 infants. It serves women fleeing domestic abuse, or recovering from mental health and substance abuse issues. "We are so grateful to our donors for keeping our facility open," says Sister June Dwyer, Executive Director of Nazareth House. "The recession has squeezed us from both sides. Our funding and donations are down while demand for our services has gone up. While recessions hurt all segments of society, the reality is our most vulnerable citizens are the ones who are hit the hardest. Thanks to the generous spirit of the men and women on Bay Street, these women and their children will continue to have a safe place to stay and not be subjected to abusive relationships, drugs or the street."Nazareth House provides: - 24 hour/day support and counselling - Experienced staff who are trained in addiction and mental health counselling - A safe, healthy and home-like environment - Individual attention to resident's diverse needs - Assistance in goal setting, learning life skills and principles of conflict resolution - Outreach services to residents after they leave the home - Support and counselling through the community reintegration process - Access to resources within close proximity: hospitals; social agencies; recovery and after care programs; child development programs; and educational centres"Nazareth House performs a constructive and permanent service in our community," says James Beattie, Head of Institutional Trading at CIBC. "It provides long term care and counselling to help women learn to live independently, rejoin the workforce, and be caring mothers to their infants. The average stay is 10 - 12 months to ensure the women they help are fully prepared emotionally, physically and mentally before leaving to make new lives for themselves. The work of Nazareth House is unique, urgent, necessary and far from over." One of the home's key private fundraising sources is "Fight for Independence," (www.fightforindependence.com) an annual charity event that sees bankers step into the boxing ring to compete against one another. The sixth annual Fight for Independence will be held September 24, 2009 at the Steam Whistle Brewery.About Nazareth House --------------------Nazareth House is a registered charity (No. 13648 2635 RR0001) sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto with funding from the City of Toronto and private donations.
