More than half of Quebec women now getting screened for breast cancer

CIBC celebrates July 28th Client Appreciation Day by reminding people of the importance of breast cancer awareness

MONTREAL, July 27, 2011/CNW/ - On July 28th, CIBC branches across Canada will turn pink as part of CIBC National Client Appreciation Day celebrations, to remind Canadians of the importance of breast cancer screening and to mark the bank's 15th anniversary as title sponsor of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.

"On National Client Appreciation Day we want to not only say 'thank you' to our clients for their business and for their tremendous support of this cause, but also to encourage all eligible women to get screened," said Christina Kramer, CIBC's Executive Vice-President and the bank's National Run Champion. "We've seen tremendous advances in the detection and treatment of breast cancer in the past 15 years, but there is still much work to be done.

"This is a cause that's very close to our hearts, because breast cancer affects so many of our clients, colleagues and loved ones. The good news is that today more people are surviving to share their stories, thanks to more women and men being screened and to improved treatments."

According to the Quebec Breast Cancer Screening Program, 56 per cent of Quebec women aged between 50 to 69 years were screened by mammography for breast cancer in 2010. The goal of the program is to get 70 per cent of women screened in this age group. Despite the enormous advances and increased survival rates, breast cancer remains the most diagnosed cancer in Quebec women, with the second highest mortality rate of all cancers.

Each year, as nearly 170,000 Canadians take part in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, more and more Quebec women and men are heeding the message that getting screened for breast cancer can help to save and prolong their lives by potentially detecting breast cancer earlier.

Last year the CIBC Run for the Cure raised more than $33 million to help the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation fund breast cancer research, education, and advocacy programs to help those who are living with breast cancer and their families. More than 13,000 CIBC employees, friends and family participated in the event.

"I am so proud to be part of Team CIBC and represent my colleagues and my community as a Run Champion for Quebec," said Gisele Brière a CIBC Run co-ordinator. "I have held this position for seven years and I have a dream that one day we can live in a world without breast cancer. Unfortunately, I have lost several friends and colleagues to the effects of this terrible illness. I will continue to fight and to participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure every year because I think it's so important not only to raise the funds to support breast cancer research, but also to raise awareness of how important it is for women to get breast cancer screenings."

"The Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation is pleased to partner with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and CIBC in organizing this event. For the past 15 years, they have been major partners in the success achieved by the CIBC Run for the Cure. We now have three sites, in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke, which enables us to circulate our awareness message on a wider scale and also gives us the opportunity to invite women to take action in terms of breast cancer screening. It is vital that they learn to know their bodies well, that they get mammograms and speak to their doctor about any change detected," said Suzanne LeBreux, general director of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.

CIBC's National Client Appreciation day activities include a contest for a chance to win a $500 Run Prize Pack. Anyone who registers for the 2011 CIBC Run for the Cure online between July 28 and August 31 using a special code available at CIBC branches will be automatically entered into the contest. As a special "Thank You', clients who register on July 28 using the code, will get two chances to win.

CIBC will also officially launch its 2011 CIBC Pink CollectionTM in its branches on Client Appreciation Day. All net proceeds from the sale of these products go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Last year the Collection raised over $1.55 million.
