CIBC recognizes Atlantic Region's top Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure student fundraisers with $10,000 Awards

Post Secondary Challenge raises nearly $470,000 for breast cancer research

HALIFAX, Nov. 29, 2011 /CNW/ - CIBC (TSX: CM) (NYSE: CM) today announced Dalhousie University student Denyne Park as the top Atlantic Region fundraiser in the Post Secondary Challenge. The Challenge inspired Canada's college and university students to raise nearly $470,000 for breast cancer research, education, awareness and advocacy through the 2011 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.

Fellow Dalhousie student Kathryn Shaw was also named among the top 10 national fundraisers.

"Congratulations to Denyne and Kathryn for their commitment to raising funds for breast cancer," said Christina Kramer, CIBC Executive Vice-President and the bank's National Run Champion. "CIBC is thrilled to present them with awards of $10,000 each to help them with their post-secondary studies."

The two Halifax students are among 15 post secondary students from across Canada to receive the $10,000 CIBC Education Awards presented to the top 10 student fundraisers nationally and to the top student fundraiser in each of the five Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation regions.

"This year, as CIBC marked our 15th anniversary as the title sponsor of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, we were very proud to present the Post Secondary Challenge in partnership with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation," added Ms. Kramer. "Our hope is to raise awareness of breast cancer among Canada's diverse student population, and motivate as many young people as possible to raise funds for a very important cause."

"For four years I participated in the Canadian Breast Cancer CIBC Foundation Run for the Cure to help support a cause that touched thousands of Canadians in some way or another," said Ms. Park. "Last year, however, the cause came a little closer to home.  My mom went for a routine annual mammogram and shortly thereafter had a lump removed from her breast.  I have become such an advocate of early detection and prevention and the Run for the Cure shares this advocacy role.

"When I found out that I was in the running to receive the CIBC Education Award I was SO excited! My first thought was gratitude for all of my friends and family for the support they showed in my fundraising efforts, especially my mom! The outpouring of support was tremendous!"

"We are delighted with the outstanding response and support we received from the post-secondary community," said Jane Parsons, CEO, CBCF - Atlantic Region. "Year over year, CIBC and its employees continually strive to foster new and innovative ways to support the work of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The CIBC Post Secondary Challenge is a shining example of their continued commitment."

The Post Secondary Challenge encouraged students to participate in a way that was both meaningful and fun, while building awareness of the importance of taking steps to reduce the risk of breast cancer by leading healthy lifestyles.
